Meatless Monday Spots in YYC

Tacos and Pad Thai at the Raw Eatery & Market in Kensington

Many articles, studies, health experts and even vegan athletes show that limiting meat consumption is  good for our health and many studies also show that it is good for the environment. According to the article, Eat less meat to avoid dangerous global warming, scientists say, in the Guardian, cutting meat consumption would also cut worldly emissions. The same Oxford research demonstrates that diets high in processed meats are a great burden to global health.

As a mostly plant-based family (we eat some dairy (butter) and fish still), it can be difficult to find restaurants that cater to your needs. I’ve noticed that Calgary is getting better over the years but when looking for hearty vegetarian meals we were often eating the same things: falafel wraps, pad thai with tofu, vegetarian Indian buffets, which is great and all but our go-to’s were getting old. Lately, there are increasingly more and more options in restaurants and Calgary has added a few more vegan or vegetarian places to the list. Here are a few of my faves!

Raw Eatery & Market

This quaint little cafe in the heart of Kensington offers a delicious menu of all raw and vegan options but, meat eaters, don’t let that deter you, the menu is delicious! They also offer kombucha on tap as well as a little market and board games! A great place to spend a meatless Monday!

The Coup

A staple in the vegan/vegetarian scene in Calgary, the Coup has a great menu of vegan and vegetarian options which in my opinion are amazing! Some dishes are more filling than others but they are all worth a shot. I have a few favourites like their Vietnamese sub and their tempeh shawarma but, you likely won’t be disappointed with and of the flavours coming from here! Also, check out their drink specials because they are always unique and interesting!

The White Rose Kitchen

This place has it all! In the quaint and ever up & coming Bowness, the extensive menu offers a wide variety of vegan, vegetarian with even some pescetarian options as well! There is absolutely something for everyone and only the freshest and most local ingredients are used!

Hearts Choices Thai Vegan Cafe

A Thai bistro with an insane amount of choices, I personally love their pad thai and their “chicken” satay skewers. They have lots of vegan “meat” options and traditional Thai food that is made vegan. I’ve never had a bad meal here and it is pretty authentic! Dine in or take it to go they also offer their vegan meats and sauces for purchase at the Calgary Farmers Market!Their staff are also incredibly friendly and lots of fun and don’t forget they have a Veggie Truck as well! They are expanding in the city and this is definitely a vegan place you need to check out in YYC!

Favourite foodie spots in Calgary

So, I love food, I mean who doesn’t? Really? In recent years, Calgary or, yyc as it is now more readily referred to as, has become quite the culinary hub. There are so many fantastic places to eat and I thought that I would share a few of my favourites.

From top to bottom:

Village Ice Cream, a local ice cream shop with a great story and even better ice cream! It doesn’t get much better than this folks! I dream about their salted caramel flavour, pictured above. All of the flavours are extremely accurate and true and are perfectly presented in this creamy, locally made ice cream. They even have a great selection of sorbets! I highly recommend stopping in here whenever you get the chance!

Wild and Raw is a superfood and juice bar located in the inner city community of Kensginton. They have a jam-packed menu of superfood filled elixirs and smoothies. They also have healthy snacks and meals to go! Check out this article for more information on this awesome Calgary superfood stop! Pictured is the “chaggacino” – my personal favourite!

The Coup, an amazing vegetarian restaurant located in the heart of Calgary serves up healthy, mouth-watering vegetarian meals. Organic, ethical and locally sourced ingredients go into these amazing dishes and I challenge anyone to find a dish they don’t like, even if they are a carnivore. They also offer take-out! I have a few favourites here, including the tempeh shawarma (pictured above) or the bun-me Vietnamese inspired sub, but, everything is amazing!

Sidewalk Citizen Bakery  is absolute perfection. I can say nothing bad about this place, well, except the fact that it’s not in the same area of the city as me so I can’t eat it daily (probably a good thing). When I lived in Sunnyside, I was a regular customer. Every baked good from Sidewalk Citizen is to die for. My favourites have to be their cinnamon rolls and the cheese sticks! I also recently tried the pizza (you can order it!) and omg, I have dreams about how good this pizza was (pictured above). Like, I can’t even describe the goodness of these baked goods without my mouth salivating and my stomach rumbling. My inner glutton comes out when it comes to Sidewalk Citizen, and I think it would be hard for anyone to refrain from buying copious amounts of baked treats from this place!

Last but not least, Analog Coffee is on my list as one of the best coffee shops in Calgary. I could probably drink 10 of their lattes in a row because the coffee is that smooth. Their array of treats is also super tempting. If you are looking for a Starbucks alternative and want high-end specialty coffee, I highly recommend this place!

My Favourite Etsy Shops for Baby Items

So, I hadn’t really ventured to purchase too many things on Etsy prior to buying baby items. I had always browsed the site and loved everything I saw, but I was so nervous to actually pull the trigger and order something!

Well, I couldn’t resist any longer and I could not be more happy with what I decided to buy. I have been *trying* as much as possible to shop local and small business when purchasing for baby. And while I have way more than enough, there are always so many cute items that are hand made by people who take such time and care to create beautiful products. I thought I would do a quick round up of the favourite shops that I have found!

3 Joyful hearts design

While this shop isn’t exactly local to me, the quality and care in the products is irresistible. My little boy is going to look so adorable going home in this cute owl crochet hat. It is super soft and made with gorgeous detail. I also purchased a cute basketball hat and diaper cover as a photo prop. If you are looking for cute crochet hats for babies or children or even some props for a newborn photo shoot, look no further than this awesome Etsy shop.

3 Joyful hearts design has hundreds of crochet styles to choose from and they are all absolutely gorgeous.

CD & Bree

I was shopping around for those cute bandanna bibs on Etsy and I was really hoping to find some super local. I searched for my area and hoped to do local pick-up. I found this great shop,  CD & Bree, for baby apparel including the bandanna bib, in so many cute patterns! Using organic cotton, these bibs are great for little baby’s drool and spit up but they still look super cute! I can’t wait to see my little guy in them! I will definitely be ordering more and I love that she is local.

Mimi Shop

In an effort to buy and support local and to avoid the big box, and valuing quality while keeping the baby toys at a minimum (really, they do not need many toys), I was introduced to Mimi Shop. This great Etsy shop is based out of Vancouver, so relatively local for me and all hand made, unique, quality baby toys. These items are so adorable, great quality and one of a kind. I purchased a music box that can be attached to the car seat or crib as well as a baby rattle. I will definitely be looking to purchase more as the quality just can’t be beat and, they are just so adorable! There are a variety of items and styles to choose from and mine were shipped out almost immediately!

Baby Nell Designs

I was looking for a simple tag blanket toy and again, wanted to purchase local. I found this local shop, Baby Nell Designs. This shop has beautiful quilts, tag blankets and bandanna bibs. I absolutely love all of the items in this shop! They are all such beautiful and unique creations and the fabric patterns are very unique! The items were shipped out quickly and again, they best part for me is to get quality hand made goods while supporting local business!

Twig and Timber

I purchased the four woodland wall pieces from Twig and Timber a while back for use in the nursery. I love how unique these pieces are and you have the option to completely customize what you want. Their woodland décor fit my nursery theme really well but they have such a variety of items to choose from that can work in any room. I highly recommend them if you are looking for something unique to your home!

Bump Day: Nursery Update!

With just over nine weeks to go, things are coming together. We still have to hang up the artwork that makes this nursery a “woodland” theme.

Getting excited and anxious!

Here a few of my favourite buys so far.

Apple Cheeks Cloth Diapers

I am so excited to try cloth diapering and while I have to admit it is a bit confusing, I am going to start with a small collection to give it my best shot! I have heard nothing but great things about Apple Cheeks so I have purchased a few from

Apple Cheeks Little Bundle, St.Lucia.

Apple Cheeks Little Bundle, Winging It.

Woodland Signs from Twig and Timber

Teepee and Tots Co. Moccasins  and organic cotton onesies from the Gap

Second Hand Bugaboo Chameleon Stroller

Whimsical Maternity Photo Shoot

A few weeks ago my friend and exceptionally talented photographer Lisa MacDougall, formerly Taylor of Lisa Taylor Photography did an awesome maternity shoot for me. It was totally perfect as I have been basically talking about wanting a flower crown for months and I love the whimsical forest stylized shoot. I felt incredibly pampered and I thought I would share a few of the photos here.
