I am currently 24 weeks pregnant with baby boy #2. It is exciting but sometimes I forget I am expecting…that’s slowly starting to change though as I feel like his growth is kicking it into high gear and my bump is going to start to grow rapidly.
This second pregnancy has been way different than my first for many reasons. It has been different in the sense that it is the second pregnancy and I remember how neurotic I was with my first pregnancy and now look back and laugh. I have been getting more breakouts with this pregnancy and I am for sure feeling more sluggish but that could be a variety of factors, including chasing my busy toddler around.
This time around I am seeing midwives. They have been awesome so far and I really love their approach to care. I was with a collective of GPs last time, which was good too but the midwives definitely take a softer and more collaborative approach to care. I am in charge of my pregnancy and they are providing support and answers to my questions. It has been great so far and I have been blessed with a risk-free pregnancy to this point. I am considering my options for a home birth and have been told I am the perfect candidate based on my last delivery.
The main thing that I have been struggling with this pregnancy is hyperthyroidism and diet as well as gaining enough weight. I am not that worried about the weight aspect because I delivered a 9.1 lb baby previously and most of my weight gain happened towards the end of pregnancy last time. I am currently seeing a Naturopath for my thyroid issues and am on a few supplements to help regulate my thyroid function. I am also supposed to be cutting out/reducing gluten and eating more calorically dense foods. I eat pretty healthily but cravings definitely get the better of me! Thyroid issues are quite common in pregnancy but so, so important to look into as there can be risks to the mother and baby.
These are the supplements I am taking in addition to my regular prenatal vitamins/supplements:
Herb and mineral blend to maintain a healthy thyroid.
Promotes T4-T3 Conversion
Stabilizes Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies
Optimizes Body Temperature
Plays a role in detoxification of heavy metals
Precursor to L-cysteine
Boosts production of glutathione
I get my bloodwork back this week to see if there has been any improvement. If not, I may have to look at other options.
